A.C. Milan & Inter Milan – San Siro Stadium

AC Milan logo

One of most beautiful memories in all of football TV watching in my life was from this stadium build in 1923 and renovated 1990 for the World Cup one and only San Siro stadium. And the first of those so vivid memories were from where from AC Milan in the 90s glory, specifically from 1987 to 1995. Do you remember those names they player do AC Milan in that time span? Here is it: listen carefully: if you are old enough you’ve probably watched hundred of games with those players named: Marco van Basten, Frank Rijkaard, Ruud Gullit,Carlo Ancelotti. Do I need to say anything more here 😀. Here is more: Franco Baresi, Paolo Maldini, Marcel Desailly, Zvonimir Boban 😮. Here is even more: Dejan Savićević, George Weah, Roberto Baggio. 😎😎😎 Unbelievable talent in one team, and I did not even named them all great players played in that time frame. No shit that I loved watching Milan every game I could. And the second one amazing memories from that stadium were from Would Cup 1990 where most of the games (from that year unfrackingmazing Germany team with Rudi Völler, Andreas Brehme, Lothar Matthäus and Jürgen Klinsmann won the World Cup) from that German (West Germany then) team were player on that same San Siro stadium. As you can see on the screenshot bellow it was different camera angle (better, higher angle) but it was 4:3 SD picture. Clearly not an experience like today with 16:9 widescreen video, but if we had that camera setup from then with today technology I guess FICAZ INDEX for San Siro stadium would be in at +80 maybe even close to 82.

World Cup San Siro – 1990

Check out the grades and final FICAZ INDEX score for San Siro bellow.

Camera Angle and Center Zoom

 A.C. Milan-Inter Milan - Main - center

It’s noticeable right away that current camera angle is much much lower that it was during World Cup 1990. And that is a disappointment of course. 20 points is just bellow average. Not exciting. We can watch decent game there from Inter and Milan but clearly a perspective of depth is clearly lacking especially in the box and on the wings. Mr “Charlie Croker” can little do about angle, but in terms of zoom, he is doing bad job in that regard. Our cameraman “Charly” is just too much trigger happy and as you can see on the screenshot, on the left, we are watching constantly micro-game with very extremely small field of view which is no fun at all for all football lovers and enthusiast like me. Zero points is all we can do here, unfortunately 😞. Let’s’ not go easy on him because “It’s a very difficult job and the only way to get through it is we all work together as a team. And that means you do everything I say.” Not col “Charlie”, not cool, lets work as a team. ZOOM out “Charlie” for the sake of the beautiful game.

Calculation:

Camera angle score for A.C. Milan & Inter Milan – San Siro =  20 points

Center Zoom score for A.C. Milan & Inter Milan – San Siro =  0 points

Zoom top (far side)

A.C. Milan-Inter Milan - Main - TopThis is the part of the pitch  where almost all cameraman fails miserably, and Mr. “Croker” was not an exception as you can see on the screenshot on the left, but somehow he had managed to tug out big 3 points which could be a crucial points to at least decent score on the end of FICAZ INDEX score-table.

Calculation:

Camera Zoom FAR side for A.C. Milan & Inter Milan – San Siro =  3 points

Zoom bottom (near side)

A.C. Milan-Inter Milan - Main - BottomFor some reason “Charlie” is here more seasonable and he allows the game to develop on its own without his constant zooming interventions. It is visible on the screenshot on the right that it looks much lucid game play with a wider greener pitch and more players in the frame. Good job, finally.

Calculation:

Camera Zoom NEAR side for A.C. Milan & Inter Milan – San Siro = 6 points

Zoom Corners

A.C. Milan-Inter Milan - Main - Corner - FarJust about average field of view from both corner. It is hard to expect different result in one part of the pitch when the same cameraman use the same technique all over the field. If he would improve his game and zoom out a little here we could have expect the better result in the other parts of the field too. and better FICAZ INDEX, of course.

Calculation:

Camera Zoom CORNER for A.C. Milan & Inter Milan – San Siro = 4 points

Extra points

Not a single gizmo of special feature from Serie A or this stadium, absolutely nothing, no SkyCam, no augmented really, nothing, very bleak coverage.  I remember World cup 1990, it was more interesting features during the broadcast than nowadays in Italian premier football league. So sad. For HREN BONUS I am giving it 2 points just for good old times sake 🤐.

 Calculation:

Extra points (max. 16 points) = 2 points

Looks like San Siro will be replaced with the brand new stadium by 2022-23 season called Nuovo Stadio Milano, so I don’t see any chance to improvement of camera angle here even if complain like crazy bunch every fracking day.
